Following the delay in the re- opening of schools across the country, a Right activist, Mr Napoleon Ekakite, has asked the Federal Government not to allow private schools’ teachers to drown in depression.
Ekakite who spoke to Journalists in Asaba on Tuesday however appluaded parents who had not been relenting on the calls for their children to resume school, observing that private schools’ teachers were currently suffering as they have not received salaries since schools were shut down in March 2020.
He said”I pity private school teachers because their salaries are no longer being paid since schools were shut down by the government, unlike their counterpart in government owned schools, throughout the lockdown, the Federal Government never provided stimulus package for private school teachers, which made life a living hell for them earn salaries should open the schools now to enable them earn salaries or provide stimulus package for them”.
Noting that Coronavirus Pandemic discease has come to stay, the activist however urged the Federal Government to put preventive measures in place to Curtail the Spread of the virus in schools and allow students to return back to school, recalling that the presidential task force on Covid-19 had at its press briefing on June 29, said that the Federal Government had approved the resumption of graduating pupils in Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3, and Senior Secondary School 3.
He said that resumption would enable the pupils to prepare for their final examinations, adding that the task force explaines that West African Examination Council had fixed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for between August 3, and September 5.
But last week, the Federal Executive Council at its meeting made a U- turn when it put the planned resumption of graduating classes on hold on the ground that it was not safe to reopen schools because of Covid-19 Pandemic disease
