A university don in the Faculty of Law at the University of Abuja, Dr. Nwakwe Abugu, has launched the book entitled: “Principles and Practice of Medical Law and Ethics”, while advising the Nigerians to demand for medical rights.
Abugu, who is the author of the book, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen after the launching of the book at Amaechi Hall, Rockview Hotel, Wuse II, Abuja, saying that the book is the doom of the new era.
He pointed out that the book would educate the Nigeria citizens on how to hold their medical doctors accountable in the area of their basic rights.
His words: I wrote this book to bring the gap in the knowledge of medical law and ethics, especially as relate to the health and medical rights of Nigerians”
He said: “My experiences over the years have shown that there is knowledge gap in the country among the generality of Nigeria populace, both the rich, the poor, the educated, the uneducated, lawyers, accountants, professionals and everybody are appeared to be equally in the same pedestal of lacking awareness of their medical and health rights”
He urged Nigerians to deem it necessary to maintain cordial relationship with their medical doctors when there are sick, while charging them to ask the doctors basic questions concerning their health status.
The author, who is the Director in charge of Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development Studies in the University, however, advised the medical professionals to practice their profession with the necessary skills and cares in accordance with the international best standards, and urged the doctors to carry the patients along in the affairs of their treatment.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the ceremony, Dr. Abduljalil Tafawa Balewa, said the book would be of benefit to the patients and the generality of Nigerians.
On his part, the Vice – chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu who was represented by the Director in charge of Academic Planning, Prof. Isah Musa Dagwa, commended the author for the step being taken to write the book in order to enlighten Nigerians on their basic health rights.
Meanwhile, the book was reviewed by Dr. Sam Amadi, Faculty of Law, Base in University, Abuja.
