The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) zonal office of the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA), in conjunction with FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were in New Kuchigoro, a settlement which has in the past four weeks played host to an influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the North-Eastern part of the country into the FCT.

The items they received include; 50 bags of rice, 30 bags of Guinea corn, 30 bags of millet – 30 bags and 50 cartons of tin tomatoes, including 50 packs of water.

Others were 300 pieces of towels, 100 pieces of buckets, 100 blankets, 200 Mats, 200 wrappers and 50 cartons of Joy soap.

According to a statement signed yesterday by Head, Public Relations Unit of FEMA, Josephine Mudasiru, the distribution of the relief items took place on Tuesday.

It added that an assistant Director in the Relief and Rehabilitation Department of the Agency, Mr. Kaka Ali, who represented its Director, Alhaji Abbas G. Idriss, at the event, said FEMA and NEMA are collaborators managing emergencies, as it is the collaboration that has brought about the distribution of relief materials.

Kaka, who received the items, said the cooperation and understanding of IDPs is needed for the success of the exercise, urging them to be tolerant and abide in peace.

“You (IDPs) should not forget that most of you are here as a result of the crisis, as it is in your best interest to maintain peace amongst yourselves until such a time that you can either return home or be reintegrated back to the society; and we are hoping that will be very soon,” he stressed.

Earlier, the FCT Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mallam Ishaya Chonoko, said that government agencies like NEMA and FEMA became aware of the camp due to the activities of Realm of Glory and Caritas Foundation, the two NGO’s that first discovered where the IDPs.

He explained that government agencies were not aware of the existence of IDP’s in the settlement, “because the camp is not a designated one, it is an informal setting where IDPs keep arriving on a daily basis.

“But immediately they were noticed, NEMA and FEMA deployed a team for Needs Assessment and that is what resulted in the exercise.”
