There are indications that the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control is set to demolish illegal structures in ECOWAS Estate, at Katampe Extension area of the nation’s capital city.
Recall that residents of the estate had petitioned the FCT Minister over illegal structures springing up in the estate.
Muktar Galadima, Director, Development Control yesterday confirmed that he has personally come to see the situation, but that there was much work to be done and that all those claiming to have allocations for plots must produce them and justify such.
On the other hand, Director, Building Inspectorate, A bdullaHi Umar put it straight whe he told reporters who were on ground that the claims of plot approvals are untrue.
His words: “These are 419 buildings, we are coming to demolish them very soon, those claims of plot approvals cannot be true, but fake as we can recorgnise green areas.”
The ECOWAS Estate at Diplomaic Zone, Katampe Extension was originally built for ECOWAS staff on owner occupire, which is considered to be enough for elite settlement.
When our correspondent visited yesterday, the well laid out road has been destroyed by heavy equipment that brought building materials. The once elite settlement has become rowdy and unkempt.
Chairman of the estate community, Dennis Eboreime complained that if they continue to keep quiet, the place will become a slum.
It was observed that buildings have taken over the green area.
Eboreime assured that the estate association would not allow illegal builders to constitute nuisance to residents.
For a resident who did not want his name mentioned said that said that one of the builders who usually intimidates residents with security operatives whenever he comes around boasted that the would buy across the river and build the entire green area and nothin will happen.
