A suspected drunken driver identified as Uche Thomas at the weekend in Ogwashi Uku near Asaba Delta allegedly killed four members of the same family.
He was said to have been driving round the community in reckless ways including shouting himself down in the process.
Eyewitness, Edith Mokwulo said that the incident which occurred in the morning of the fateful day, also had three persons sustaining fatal injuries and are currently battling for survival at a private hospital where they are being treated at the outskirt of the town, adding that the family of the four were on their way home from a church clean up ahead of Sunday worship when they met their untimely death in the hands of the reckless driver.
It was gathered that the incident caused serious and palpable fear of the unknown within the community and on the road as the four persons died on the spot before helps could come their way even before they were taken to the hospital.
But the Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Muhammed Inuwah who briefed journalists in Asaba on Sunday on the incident, said that though the driver is currently being detained, adding that it was clear that the driver was heavily drunk and could not control himself as his Toyota Camry car with plate number ASB 635 AH was seen by onlookers as a treat to those who watched the unfolding event, adding that investigation was ongoing with a view to bringing the culprit to court and be sentenced as such water.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security Civil and Defence Corps ( NSCDC) at the weekend arrested two suspected thieves who allegedly broke into the office of the Delta state Account- General and Ministry of Economic Planning to steal air conditioner compressors.
It was gathered that the offices are located along Felix Ibrubi Secretariat in Asaba .
An officer of the operatives who did not want his name in the print confirmed that the suspected vandals were identified as: Edebreh Mohammed and Isa Good luck, adding that they caught at about 2:30am on the fateful weekend while trying to transport the stolen items away from the secretariat
When contacted, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Eke Onyekachi confirmed the arrest of the suspects, disclosing that they will be charged to court on completion of investigations and warned that NSCDC would soon embark on operations comb every nooks and crannies in the state for Illegal crude oil thieves, especially at the Niger Delta region.
