The Police in Ogwashi-Uku Community, near Asaba Delta State has arrested a leading member of Ogbe-Ubu Quarters (name withheld) following allegedly mismanaged fund running into millions of naira.
Although the suspect was arrested on Wednesday night at his residence, but has been granted bail following the intervention of some highly placed chiefs in the community.
It was reliably gathered that crisis has been brewing over the alleged mismanagement of Ogbe-Ubu community fund by a group of the community leaders, including the suspects; a situation that also caused the lives of some unidentified persons.
The suspect was allegedly defiled by the Onu-Diokpa of the Quarters (name withheld) to visit some of the Quarters’ satellite town, and collect levies due to the Quarters when the bubble burst.
Investigation revealed that the suspect was arrested, following a petition that was forwarded by an opposition group in the quarter who allegedly had been against the Onu-Diokpa leadership.
But Police Officers attached to the Ogwashi-Uku Police Division who did not want their names in the print, confirmed the arrest of the community leader, adding that though he was granted bail, he was still under investigation for alleged mismanagement of funds belonging to the Ogbe-Ubu Quarters in the community.
Meanwhile residents of Okpanam have raised the alarm following the frequent cases of breaking and entry into houses in the community by armed robbers.
Some of the residents one of them, Agnes Okonkwo said the situation of the frequent attacks by armed robbers on them as residents, was becoming too unbecoming, adding that many of them had lost valuable properties, including cash to the hoodlums.
They however called on the police to redouble its efforts to ensure the robbers are brought to book as they presently sleep with their two eyes open.
