As part of his Prisons visitation, Delta state Chief Judge, Justice Marshall Umukoro on Tuesday granted Pardon to 18 awaiting trial inmates in Warri Okere Correctional Centre, while four others were granted bail.
Justice Umukoro who refused to entertain kidnap cases for possible pardon, said kidnapping has become an intractable problem, adding that “two weeks ago, a retired police officer was kidnapped in Warri, a situation he described as pathetic and unbelievable.
He also turned down inmates already facing trials, saying that” Prison visitation” is not to throw open the doors of our Prisons but to ensure that cases are speedily tried
Justice Umukoro said that pardon was granted where witnesses were not ready to testify and where Offenders have spent several years as awaiting trial inmates for minor Offences that could have earned them lesser sentence if speedily tried and convicted in court.
Those granted Pardon by Justice Umukoro included 33 year old Christopher Francis who had Spent Five years as an awaiting trial inmate for unlawful carnal knowledge, Collins Marvis was Charged for armed robbery six years ago for a fresh Charge after being discharged for Conspiracy and armed robbery Six years ago without trial as we as Dennis Lucky who was rearrested four years ago for a fresh Charge after being discharged for Conspiracy and armed robbery, among other cases which enjoyed Pardon.
