The tenure of the incumbent Governing Board of the Delta State Oil Production Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has been elongated by six months.
The state House of Assembly approved the extension during Delta Assembly yesterday’s plenary, following a letter of request from the Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, read by the Speaker, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
The State Governor Stated that the tenure of the current Governing Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Area Commission expired on Monday, August 27, 2018.
He stated however that the request is in line with Section Seven subsection two (b) of the DESOPADEC (amendment) Law 2018.
Okowa thereby, sought the approval of the House by way of resolution for six months tenure extension of the DESOPADEC.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Tim Owhefere moved for receipt and approval of the request and was seconded by Hon. Erhitiake Ibori Suonu and Hon. Peter Okagbare respectively.
The House unanimously approved the request following a voice vote thrown to the floor by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
Recall that the DESOPADEC law was amended last week, giving powers to the Governor to extend the tenure of the board for not more than one year. the sections amended include Section Five by deleting the word “Communities” and replacing it with “Areas”.
While in Section Seven Sub Section Two, a new section was added which reads that the governor may through a request to the House of Assembly, extend the tenure of the board for a period of not more than one year only.
