The death toll in the boat mishap in a river in Dampar village of Ibi local government area of Taraba state on Wednesday, has reached 92.
The incident was said to have occurred after an alleged attack by suspected Tarok elements from Plateau state. They were alleged to have attacked and burnt down the houses of the villagers.
An eye witness, Musa Bello, told our correspondent that the attack on the village forced the villagers to flee for safety, but in the process, those who ran to the riverside and picked a boat to run to safety got killed in the boat accident.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident, but said they were yet to confirm the actual number of casualties.
A Red Cross member, Abdulhamid Sale, told our correspondent in an telephone chat that corpses of victims have been deposited at a nearby clinic in Ibi town, the headquarters of Ibi local government area of the state.
