Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) says it had sensitised no fewer than 411 communities across its franchise areas on conflict resolution and the need to sustain peaceful co-existence in the country to attract business opportunities to Northern Nigeria.

Dr Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, the Managing Director of KEDCO who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen said the awareness in that regard, which has been on-going for five years, was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).

According to Gwamna, peace has become too important to be neglected in view of the security challenges in the country and the need to attract business opportunities to the country.

He added that no company or business could thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity, hence KEDCO resolved to help out in that area by creating awareness on the value of peace to wealth creation in Nigeria.

“Businesses thrive better in an atmosphere of peace. Knowing full well the relevance of peace in the face of our present security challenges in the country, we in KEDCO turned our CSR to seek for the sustaining of the prevailing peace in our franchise areas as well as give awareness to the communities on how to resolve conflicts before it becomes a security challenge.

“From our research, two things are key to industrial boom in Northern Nigeria and these are peace and power. While we are improving our capacity to strengthening the power sector in our franchise areas, we are also creating awareness on peace and conflict resolution to boost that industrial boom in Northern Nigeria to assist the government in the area of reducing unemployment.

“Before we install any of our equipment, we engage the people on peace and how to resolve conflict before it becomes a challenge. So far, we have engaged over 411 communities in 5 years. This has paid off because our installations in those communities have been secured to an extent.

“As far as our presence is in any community, it becomes our CSR to ensure that there is peace and when there are skirmishes we quickly engage the involved parties for resolution. You know that hoodlums take advantage of chaos so we have ensured that hoodlums didn’t profit in these communities in the 5 years of this campaign.

The Kano DisCo boss appealed to corporate bodies to see peace as an area to invest in the cause of carrying out their CSR, adding that such would complement the efforts of government and strengthen good relations with their host communities.

Gwamna further appealed to all communities under KEDCO franchise areas to continue to sustain the prevailing peace while jettisoning issues that could result to serious security challenge for the country.
