What appeared to be a crack in the fold of the FCT Football Association is emerging as board members have questioned the power of the secretary of the FA to call for an Extraordinary Congress without the knowledge of the Executive Committee.
The members who reacted furiously to the congress called by the FA chairman, Musa Talle, questioned the rationale for such congress without first holding Executive Committee meeting whose constitutional duty it is to call for such congress.
The chairman had Monday through a statement by the Secretary of the FA, Haruna Ilerika called for an Extraordinary Congress on Friday, 22nd February, 2019 at Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Abuja by 10am
The statement notes that the Chairman of the FCT FA, Alhaji Musa Talle “therefore called on all stakeholders in the football body to be punctual for the congress which he described as important and historical.”
Reacting to the development, Godwin Bamigboye, a board member of the FA, questioned the wisdom in calling for the emergency meeting without Executive Board meeting and advised the FA to toe the line of rules and best practices
“My attention and that of some members of the FCT Football Association Board has been drawn to a statement that the FCT Football Association extraordinary Congress will hold on Friday, 22nd February, 2019. I state here that as a Board Member, it is best practice to summon a Board meeting to discuss the Congress and its modality and also fix a date for the Congress.
“We held a General Assembly four years ago and we are about to host one without the input of Board Members. Let us abide by the directives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board as contained in the Communiqué during the meeting where the decision to suspend elections nationwide was taken. Let us follow procedure, please. Thank you.
Godwin Bamigboye, Board Member, FCT FA,” he said.
In another reaction to the message on the FCT football Whatsapp group, the Chairman of the FCT Coaches Association said “I thought the FCT Football Association (FCT FA) Board is saddled with the responsibility to meet to decide on the date of the Congress and its modality. Can we hold a Board meeting to ratify this date, please. Thank you.”
On her part, Chairperson, FCT FA Women Development Committee, Barri. Victoria Lemigbo described the statement as unacceptable.
“This is very completely absurd. Convening of extraordinary Congress of stakeholders is the function of the executive committee duly convened with quorum.
“This meeting among other things will agree for such a Congress to hold with date time and other modalities duly agreed. It is completely shocking to get such information on this platform for the first time. This is completely wrong and unacceptable,” she said.
The team will open their Olympic qualifying series against Libya at home on February 20 with the return leg on 23rd in a yet to be decided venue in the North African country.
Following unrest in Libya, matches involving the national teams have been relocated to neighbouring countries with the Libyan’s national team AFCON qualifier against Super Eagles in October moved to Tunisia.
