No fewer than 3,610 orphans from across the 34 LGAs were assisted with funds by the Department of Girl Child Education and Development at the height of COVID-19 pandemic in Katsina state.
Similarly, the department has supported 400 orphans and vulnerable children to acquire education and skills acquisition.
Hajiya Amina Lawal Dauda, the state Special Adviser on Girl Child Education and Development stated this while briefing newsmen on the achievements recorded in her department in Katsina on Thursday.
Hajiya Amina said towards achieving the feat, the state government has expended N54 million and N19 million respectively to improve the economic situation of orphans in the state.
The Special Adviser said during the period under review, five orphans were married off to their suitors, while the sum of N3.5 million was incurred for the provision of furnitures, kitchen utensils amongst others.
“Bed and beddings, kitchen utensils, sewing machines, deep freezers, cushions sets for the female orphans, while dowry, bridal gifts and other marriage requirements where provided for the male orphans”.
On children in state owned orphanage homes, she said out of the 69 children admitted, twenty three were fostered out to interested foster parents in some local government areas of the state.
She also added that, her department has traced and reunited thirteen abandon and lost children with their parents and relatives for proper care and attention.
