In what appears as a frantic and drastic measure to curtail the spread of the deadly Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19, Chairmen of the six FCT Area Councils have declared indefinite shutdown of their respective secretariats.
Consequently, the Chairmen enjoined all workers in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Gwagwalada, Bwari, Kuje and Kwali Area Councils to be calm and vigilant while remaining at home until further notice.
Disclosing this during a joint press briefing yesterday, the Chairman of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) FCT chapter, Mustapha Danze, said the decision was necessary, following the outbreak of the disease in the Territory.
Danze, who is also the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, spoke on behalf of other council Chairmen, who were equally present at the media briefing held at the AMAC Secretariat, in Garki-Abuja.
He explained that all the six council chairmen reached the conclusion in the interest of the staff and resident during a meeting, urging all stakeholders to comply with the directive.
He however noted that although all the council secretariats will remain closed and further directive will be issued in the future, there will be a skeletal services especially with the health department of the council.
In what seems to be a subtle way to cushion the effects of the development, the FCT ALGON boss revealed that appropriate measures have been put in place to ensure staff salaries are paid as at when due, despite the closure.
