Mobile Courts sitting at the state Police Command headquarters in Asaba have Convicted 90 defaulters including some persons accused of stealing, among others.
The Courts presided over by magistrates Helen Ikeh, and Maurice Okwuasaba discharged their duties according to the law as non of the defaulters were favoured but sentenced accordingly.
Magistrate Helen Ikeh who noted that the defaulters delibrately violated the state government orders, on Wednesday convicted a total of 33 defaulters, while 20 Persons were discharged.
Among the Convicted included,: Osiroya Moses , Chidera Oforka, Onwordi Onyeka, and Uzoma Obiechie, among others.
Obiechie and Onyenka were arraigned for violating the lockdown order, Osiroya and Chidera were charged for stealing, and according to prosecutor, Osiroya and Chidera residents of OkweCommunity in Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state, Conspired among themselves to steal an LG air- Conditioner, property of Kuma Company, Asaba, valued at N120,000 as the first defendant, Osiroya pleaded guilty to the Charge against him, while the second defendant pleaded not guilty
The magistrate in her Judgement, Convicted the first defendant while the prosecutor sought for the Court permission to Present the exhibits on April 23rd ,2020 and it was granted, while in the case of the second defendant,he was granted bail in the sum of N2,000 with a surety in the like sum .
The surety , according to the ruling,must reside within the Jurisdiction of the Court, Swear to an affidavit of means and should submit two passport photographs
At the Court Presided over by Maurice Okwuasaba,28 defaulters were sentenced, while 19 Persons were discharged while Eze Azu, and Mohammed Ali Sani were among those Convicted by the Magistrate
Responding to the Magistrate’s question, Eze , a Commercial Motorcycle rider who lives at Oko Community in Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state,told the Court that he went to Ogbo Ogwu in. Onitsha to buy drugs for his sick Mother and was arrested on his way home, while in his defence, Sani also a motorcycle rider, explained that he was riding behind the tricycle he hired to his Pregnant wife to the hospital when he was arrested.
The Presiding Magistrate in his Judgement, Ordered Eze to pay a fine of N1000 while his tricycle would remain at the Police station till after lockdown period. Sani was also fined N2,000 and was told to come for the release of his tricycle at the end of the lockdown, while in Sapele, 21
defaulters out of 29 arriagned for Contravening the Delta state Government’s lockdown order were Convicted while eight Persons were discharged.
Meanwhile, a middle aged man identified as Chukwunoso Friday was on Wednesday beaten to pulp for allegedly stealing a Samsung phone in a saloon in Abraka town
Chukwunoso a native of Abia state was alleged to have attempted to exit the Barbing Saloon after stealing the phone when nemesis caught up with him as the owner of the saloon unknown to Chukwunoso was watching him.
Speaking to Journalists in the area, the Owner of the Saloon, Christmas Idowu said” the Suspect stylishly retrieved the phone where the owner was Charging it and attempted to leave the shop, so I asked him to quietly give me the phone or I will expose him and immediately broke hold because I held him by the hand and ran out before I handed him over to the police”, but the Police Divisional Officer ( DPO) In the area, CSP Hassan Isah Confirmed the incident adding that the Suspect upon interrogation Confessed to the Crime as investigation was ongoing
