An Abuja Grade 1 area court in Kado, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has sentenced one Kunle Giwa, 23, to three months in prison for theft.
However, the presiding officer, Malam Abubakar Sadiq, gave the convict an option to pay a N2, 000 fine.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Simeon Ibrahim, had earlier told the court that on January 20, Anor Demenaye of Salams Guest Inn in Maitama, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station.
Ibrahim said that Giwa, a salesman at Assorted Gardens, Utako, Abuja, stole two gas cylinders at the garden.
He said that the complainant, who is the manager of the garden, realised that his cylinders were missing when he wanted to refill them with cooking gas.
The prosecutor said that during investigation, the convict was arrested and it was discovered that he had already sold the cylinders for N2, 000.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 289 of the Penal code.
Giwa pleaded guilty to the charge, and appealed to the court to show mercy on him.
He said he committed the act because he had yet to be paid for the more than one month that he had worked in the garden, and he needed to survive. (NAN)
