The former National President of Counseling Association of Nigeria(CASSON) and current Provost, Adeyemi college of Education, Ondo State, Prof Adeyemi Idowu has advocated poverty reduction in Nigeria through the implementation of Counseling, Human Development in the country’s Universities.
Idowu, a Professor at the department of Counseling Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin stated this during the 145th inaugural lecture of the institution entitled: “ Raising the bar:Thecounsellors’ mandate”.
The university don, who attributed unemployment to absence of Professional Counselor Educators in Nigeria said the National Assembly should pass laws mandating the issuing of license and certificate to Professional Counseling Educators.
Idowu added that if the issue of counseling was not adequately and appropriately dealt with, “there is the danger that Nigeria will, for long, continue to be a nation of unrealised hopes and unfulfilled promises”.
The university don urged federal government to support and fund training of Counselors in Nigerian Universities as pronounced by the Minister of Education stressing that portion of annual education sector budget should be allocate to the implementation of counseling services in the country.
