From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
An official of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC Mr. James Yiye was allegedly beaten up by some staff of Ukum local government area of Benue State at the weekend in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.
The Commission’s Public Relations’ Officer Mr. Louis Ochai who confirmed this in a telephone chat with our reporter yesterday, however, said he is yet to ascertain reasons for the attack on the official.
But an anonymous source told Peoplesdaily that Mr. Yiye was manhandled because he adamantly refused to give out INEC materials to the LG staff who intended to manipulate the exercise.
“The INEC staff was beaten to pulp and had to be rushed to Makurdi”, the source said.
Chairman of Ukum LG Barr. Teryima Nguher outrightly denied the allegations that an official of the Independent Electoral Commission in the area Mr. James Yiye was beaten
The chairman who made the denial in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, maintained that such incident never happened in his domain, alluding that the registration has been going on hitch- free.
He however, regretted over the late commencement of the exercise in the area as well as the long delay in registering voters.
