Condemnation trailed the rape to death of a sickler, Deborah Bassey, a 300 level student of Benson Idhaosah University, Benin, who was said to have been gang raped to death by some hooligans along Reservation Road, Benin, Edo State.
Major reaction came from the founder of Sickle Cell Health Promotion Centre, Badarwa, Kaduna, Hajiya Badiya Magaji Inuwa, while speaking to Peoples Daily, described the incident as not only an abuse to sickler patients but to woman hood at large.
Hajiya Badiya called on Federal government and the Edo State government to immediately put all machinery in motion in order to arrest the perpetrators of this gruesome act and bring them to justice in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Founder of the Sickle Cell Health Promotion Centre, said this is the time for the leadership to come out and put in place programs to ensure that the youth are properly engaged .
“I am sure that those who commit this criminal act may either be people who are unemployed or facing abject poverty or are drug addicts. Like the saying goes, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, I call on government to provide means of livelihood to our teeming youth in order to discourage them from engaging in such crime.
“I call on the federal government to intensify enlightenment and sensitization campaign on youth and people who are about to get married to do their genotype test in order to know their gene. It is only by doing this that we can cut down the numbers of new born babies with sickle cell anemia.
“We sincerely sympathise with the family of Deborah Bassey and join our voice to call on security agents to intensify effort and ensure that the culprits face the law,” she said.
