A senior official of Nigerian government and Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Stephen Anthony Awuru has said that the People’s Republic of China has the capacity to defeat the outbreak of Pneumonia caused by novel Coronavirus in Wuhan.
”There is need for us to help China in whatever way we can, because the world is a global village. Nigeria has shown support in its own way. We must commend the effort China in their early intervention for making Coronavirus not to spread to other parts of the world. Nigeria has absolute confidence that China has the capacity to defeat the virus” he stated.
Awuru who made this known in Abuja yesterday in his remarks during a dialogue on the theme, “Nigeria-China Cooperation in the Context of Health Emergency: Imperative of Joint Efforts and Collaboration” organized by Centre for China Studies (CCS) commended China’s readiness and willingness to share information with the world on how best to curtail the deadly virus.
In his keynote address, Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian said that all the responses to the virus should be science based instead of fear.
“It is understandable that some countries have taken necessary and appropriate prevention measures.
“But we disapprove of measures out of proportion. As WHO insists there is no pandemic yet and there is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. WHO doesn’t recommend and actually oppose limiting trade and movement”.
Zhou said that guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, China is fulfilling its responsibility for the life and health of its own people and for global public health.
He informed that China’s effective response has averted the further spread of the virus in the world and China will work more closely with the international community to contain the epidemic in the Spirit of openness and transparency and safeguard global public health security.
“We encourage other countries to follow and act on WHO’s travel and health recommendations. China will continue to take good care of foreign nationals in China like its own. We will stay in close communication with Nigeria and provide updates on latest developments, protect the life and health of the Nigerian nationals in China, thereby safeguarding the health and safety of people in both countries”.
Speaking also, President of China Alumni Association of Nigeria, Muhammed Sulaiman conveyed the solidarity of the organization to China as they continue to alleviate the suffering, treating and controlling the spread of the Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan and other parts of China.
He said there admiration stems deeply from the very prompt responses they have been providing to the people of Wuhan and other affected cities, which is owed to the immeasurable efforts of the Government of China, with the courage and compassion of the medical teams on the frontline, who are treating and preventing the spread of Coronavirus across China.
The Director of Center for China Studies (CCS) Mr. Charles Onunaiju in his remarks noted that Dr. Zhou Pingjian has been promoting public diplomacy and intervened in virtually all strata of the Nigeria society.
He said that China, Nigeria relation is quite phenomenal and China’s scientific community has already provided a roadmap to roll back the disease.
