Former President, Nigeria Football Federation, Alahaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi has stated that the death of former Nigeria National League, NLL Chairman, Chidi Ofo Okenwa was a huge loss to the development of Nigeria football.
Alhaji Lulu who is the proprietor of Fosla Academy and Fosla Football Club, FFC stated this in a condolence message to the family of Late Okenwa over the weekend.
He described late Ofo’s death as a shock and unbelievable news noting that the former Enugu State Football Association chairman and Executive Board member of the NFF was a dependable, forthright and principled football administrator who had impacted positively on grassroots football development in the country.
While extoling the leadership ingenuity the 50 year old Ofo brought to bear in football development in the country, Alhaji Lulu prayed God to forgive him his shortcomings and give the family the fortitude to bear the irredeemable loss.
“The death of Chidi Ofo Okenwa is a rude shock to me. It is an unbelievable news that is hard to fathom.
“Chief Ofo Okenwa was a reliable, dependable and forthright gentleman of immense leadership and administrative prowess.
“I spoke with him when he celebrated his birthday on the 24th April and there was no indication of someone who was sick
“I have known Okenwa for many years, and his personality, integrity, leadership style cannot be matched.
“He was one of the good hands in the Nigeria Football Federation and it was no doubt why he was an executive board member as well as a member of the technical committee.
“His passion for football particularly at the grassroots is unrivalled. Just in March he concluded the Flavour U-13 Tournament in Enugu which was sponsored by Nigeria top musician, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour where budding talents were discovered.
“As the Chairman of the most important league in the country, the Nigeria National League, his stewardship ensured a progressive trajectory for the league until recently. He exhibited uncommon foresight to take the league to where it is today.
“In Enugu state where he recently won election for another term in office as the state’s FA Chairman, he carried the academies in the state like his pet project and introduced programmes such as “Boot to Book” to promote education among aspiring footballers in the school. The state under his leadership has been in the vanguard for promoting grassroots football.
“Indeed, the death of Chief Chidi Ofo Okenwa is a huge loss to Nigeria football family.
“While we all mourn and bereave at this point, it is also necessary to remember his family that he left behind.
“I pray that the God Almighty who knows all of us in and out, will forgive his shortcomings and give the family the fortitude to bear this irredeemable loss,” he said.
