Committee of Concerned Political Parties (CCPP) made up of 22 political parties in Nigeria has said it will summon a meeting of committee of the whole to consider the report of its sub-committee on Electoral matters as regards to the National Assembly amendment proceedings on election timetable to take position and advice Nigerians and all the stakeholders on the next line of action.
In a statement issued by the Protem chairman of the group, Breakforth Onwubuya, CCPP said on 1st February it set up five (5) sub-committees, amongst which is the committee on restructuring Nigeria and electoral matters.
It said the Committee on Electoral Matters has been following up the activities in the National Assembly and has submitted part of their findings and report on the proceedings in the National Assembly on the rescheduling of sequence of 2019 general elections.
While recounting the recent faceoff in the National Assembly regarding the new sequence, Onwubuya said “We the CCPP fray at this, as it negate our democratic norms and shows impunity, abuse of office and desperations by some members of the National Assembly of both chambers.
“CCPP hereby reminds the Senators and Members of the federal House of Representatives that they were elected represent the interest of the masses not themselves.
“CCPP condemned the manner at the Section 25 of the electoral Act was amended, it is a self-serving, Partisan, unpatriotic and unwholesome interference on the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in order to achieve self-interests”, the statement said.
