From Ayodele Samuel, Lagos
A group of Borno indigenes living in Lagos and other parts of the Southwestern States of Nigeria yesterday told ex-Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff that he had no right to impose an associate of his, Alhaji Mohammed Imam as governorship candidate of the PDP in the state after he (Sheriff) had refused allowing Imam to marry his daughter on the basis that Imam wasn’t a responsible man.
The Borno PDP had on December 11, 2014 after a meeting in Abuja, attended by President Goodluck Jonathan, National chairman of the party and other stakeholders, adopted Alhaji Gambo Lawan as governorship candidate following which a mini primary election was held with delegates affirming Lawan and certificate of return presented to him by the INEC. However, former Governor Sheriff, relying on his close ties with President Jonathan, had Imam’s name smuggled in on Wednesday, 24th December, 2014, to replace Lawan. Lawan filed a case at a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday, challenging his substitution.
The tussle over the PDP governorship primaries influenced yesterday’s briefing in Lagos by the Yerwa-Odu’a Socio-Economic Society (YOSES) which is a union of Concerned Indigenes of Borno State in Southwestern States of Nigeria held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Text of the group’s briefing, titled “2015 and the Future of Borno People: Urgent Matters Arising, which was read and discussed by the groups’ chairman, Alhaji Kachalla G. Bulama and Haruna Womdio, the group’s secretary.
“It is very important for us to inform all of you and the public that from 2007 to 2011, this same Alhaji Mimam went into courtship with the first daughter of former governor Ali Modu Sheriff. Her name is Hadiza. Imam was so much in love with that lady and many people in Borno knew about it. Imam was at that time about 4o years or so. The lady was so much in love with Imam from what many people knew but Sheriff or SAS refused to allow Imam to marry her because he said Imam was not responsible. We will not go into specifics about his character; you can please find out yourselves as journalists that should lead the public to making informed decisions.
