Federal Government has said the one billion dollars external loan it is seeking approval from National Assembly is to meet the recent request made by the Nigerian Army to reinforce its equipment and not just to prosecute war against insurgency alone.
The Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri stated this yesterday in Abuja while addressing journalist at the centre.
He said the funds is to meet the needs of the soldiers and ensure long term provision of the requirement of the armed forces.
He debunked allegations that the nation’s resources has depleted saying that it was normal for such a loan since the payment will be spread over a period of time.
“Normally, you don’t just get up and make request for nothing, there must be a need, the people who are making this request must have identified their stock requirement and they understand the need to restock, all countries do it.
“This request is not for the Federal Government of Nigeria to go and collect cash from somebody. It is a long-term arrangement, which most countries of the world are known for. It happens in the United States.
Omeri also said government will ensure transparency in this long term process that it is putting together and it will be use for the purpose it is meant for.
He also said the alleged mastermind of the Nyanya bombings, Aminu Ogwuche, who has been repatriated into the country ,would be tried according to Nigerian laws.
