The Maiduguri Diocese has erected a giant cross on a mountain in Bazza town of Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa state as part of the ceremony for the re-consecration of the diocese.
Commissioning the new cross on the Bazza Mountain, the Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese,Most Rev.Dr.Oliver Dashe Doeme said the erection of the cross was to the immaculate heart of Virgin Mary.
Bishop Dashe told the congregation that, the structure was sponsored by a group of spirited individuals in London, who felt to contribute their quota in the propagation of Christianity.
“The cross which is the biggest in Nigeria is sponsored by our spiritual friends in London.
“The significance of this cross is that our people who are traumatized, devastated and in pain can come here for consolation; that’s why we built the cross here.
“The cross symbolize the victory of Christ over Satan. When we come to the cross and venerate it, we are asking Jesus to help us surmount our problems and challenges that we face as pilgrims towards God’s kingdom,” Dashe said.
While answering questions in an interview with journalists at the ceremony, Bishop Dashe appealed to Federal Government to involve religious bodies in its resettlement and rehabilitation process in the North East.
Dashe who lauded government for its effort in bringing peace and restoration of civil authority in the north east observed that for maximum result, government agencies involved in resettlement and rehabilitation of returnees needed to work in close collaboration with religious bodies.
“We thank God for the tremendous development in restoring normalcy in the north east. Federal Government has done well and I want to thank our military.
“I want to urge government agencies involve in the north east to partner with the church in the resettlement process; we are closer to the people as we are on ground with the people,” Dashe said.
An engineer who constructed the cross, Engr. Mrs Christiana Victor Madugu said that the cross took her one month to construct.
Also speaking, Rev. Gabriel said other events marked for the occasion included the the handing over of a health Centre donated to the church by Andrew Robbert and the inauguration of the rehabilitated Minor Seminary of the church is Shuwa that was destroyed by Boko Haram insurgency.
The who grace the Bazza occasion included the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese in Imo state, Bishop Peter Okpaleke, Bishop of Ilorin Diocese, Bishop Ayo Maria, Bishop of Yola Diocese, Bishop Dami Mamza and Bishop of Panshin Diocese in Plateau state, Bishop Michael Gokum.
