Benue State Government is to establish an internal security outfit to fight internal and external aggressors.
The State Governor Samuel Ortom who disclosed this yesterday during an interview with newsmen in Government House, said though the North Central States are yet to decide what form of security outfit is best suited for it, Benue State has no option to toll the path of the South Western States and set up a replica of Amotekum.
He said when established, the security outfit will complement the effort of the conventional security that is grossly inadequate to tackle the emerging security situation in the State.
Ortom also, promised to mobilize the Agro-Rangers to keep vigil over herdsmen who now come into the State without their cows but to cause mayhem on the people.
“This is a very difficult time for us as a State. It is indeed a trying time. We are having intra communal clashes all over the place. It is quite challenging. The rainy season will soon commence and so, we are challenged by constant disagreement over land. However, we are doing our best with the security on ground but like I keep saying, it is inadequate to address the volume of problem we are faced with.
“We are mobilizing traditional rulers to sensitize their people on the need for dialogue rather than taking up arms. External aggression from herdsmen has not stopped. They are using guerilla tactics to kill, burn down houses and proceed to the next point. This, we have discussed amongst security men and they are closing up on them.
“I think there would be need for the State to form a security outfit that will complement the conventional security agencies. How can a local government area like Guma have only 50 Police officers. We need to secure the State for our farmer who practices subsistent agriculture to go back and cultivate the land or else, we will experience food security, “he posited.
