Benue State Commissioner for Education Prof. Dennis Ityavyar has decried the level of infrastructural decay at Government College, Makurdi despite producing influential personalities in the country.
Prof. Ityavyar who said this at the Commissioning of a borehole constructed by Dr. Bitrus Chagwa of Set 94, noted that the school has produced former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam(now Senator representing Benue North East Senatorial District), former Governor of Plateau State Joshua Dariye, erstwhile Governor of Nassarawa State Tanko Almakura(now a Senator), current Deputy Governor of Benue State Engr. Benson Abounu and former Speaker of the State Assembly David Iorhemba.
He said with these calibre of individuals and several others in the public and private sectors, the school should rank amongst the best in the country, lamenting over the neglect by the alumnus.
Prof. Ityavyar observed the dilapidation of facilities at the College particularly encroachment on its land, stating that government has committed a lot of resources in renovating the sxhool, adding that it is a continuous process.
“Government is interested in the school and renovation is a continuous process. There is need to always give facilities at the College face-lift. Land encroachment is common in all schools in the State. We are going to send surveyors to all schools to ensure that their perimeter is secured.
“I commend Dr. Chagwa and set 94 for the project and urge the old boys to do more by initiating projects for their alma Mata. There should be healthy competition amongst the sets. They should set goals every year for the growth of the school”, Ityavyar said.
Makurdi Old Boys Association Set 94 Governor Paul Tion regretted over the encroachment of the school land, noting that over 90 percent of the school farm have been taken over by individuals, noting too, erection of illegal structures, infrastructural decay and vandalized amenities like computers.
