The Candidate of Peoples Democratic party (PDP) for the September 19, 2020 Governorship election in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki on Thursday predicted that Benin metropolis may be the hardest hit if urgent steps are not taken to address various challenges.
Obaseki, revealed plans to arrest the situation, following the introduction of Geographic Information system (GIS) survey by his Government through the cooperation of the traditional institution.

He promised to meet with the traditional rulers and extract commitment from them about the plan after the forthcoming poll.
“You can see the effects of large sheet in the land. You have seen that we are having challenges with erosion control. Driving here was hectic because these was a forest many years ago.
“Now, the population is spreading fast. If we do plan for it, what all happen will be out of control environmentally, physically and socially.
“So, I pray to God Almighty that after the elections, we will have to meet like this because we cannot plan on your land without you participating in the planning.
“But, it is something that we must do. The rate at which the population is increasing particularly in the Benin City area is frightening.
“Rough count, we have half a million in the past 25-30 years. Today, they are above it two million people in Benin City area and it is growing till tomorrow even faster.
“In addition to all the other things that we are doing, we had to plan for social development, we have to plan for jobs for these people who are coming in would be engaged in and we have to plan for things like security.”
