Bello charges FCT Councils’ Chairmen to shun corruption

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello charged the newly sworn-in Area Councils Chairmen to shun all acts of corruption and reckless spending, so as to ensure effective governance at the grassroot level.
Bello specifically tasked them on the need to imbibe the virtues of good governance and accountability in the discharge of their duties, as they will be accountable to God and to the people who elected them to office.
He gave this charge yesterday, while delivering his keynote address during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Area Council Chairmen at the FCDA Conference Hall in Abuja.
He said: “The temptations that come with occupying an elected public office are enormous but you must not lose sight of the fact that you are accountable to the people.
“The welfare and wellbeing of your people should come first in all your decisions and actions. You must learn from the mistakes of your predecessors and build on their successes.
“You should resist the temptation to discard good ideas or discontinue laudable projects because they were initiated by officials from another political lineage.”
The Minister further advised them to cultivate very cordial working relationship with traditional rulers and other stakeholders irrespective of political and religious affiiations.
While giving a vote of thanks on behalf of other Chairmen, Chariman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abdullahi Adamu Candido, commended the FCTA for organizing an induction course for them, which will ensure efficiency in governance.
He stressed the need to consider establishment of a strong Communication link between the FCT Administration and Area Councils, so as to reduce conflicts in the line of duty.
The newly sworn-in Chairmen include: Abdullahi Adamu Candido, AMAC; Abdulrahman Ajiya, Abaji Area Council ; John Gabaya Shekwogaza, Bwari Area Council ; Adamu Mustapha Danze, Gwagwalada Area Council ; Abdullahi Suleiman Sabo Area Council , Kuje and Daniel Chiya, Kwali Area Council.
It will be recalled that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won four Chairmanship seat of area councils of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Gwagwalada and Kwali while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won Bwari and Kuje area council at the just concluded 2019 elections.
