From Ahmed Mohammed, Bauchi
The Bauchi State Coalition against Financial Crime and Injustice has given three days ultimatum to the Economic Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to commence investigation and prosecute former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar over allegations of corruption against him while in office or they will be left with no option but to sue them to court.
Chairman of the Coalition, Alhaji Bibi Dogo stated this over the weekend when he addressed a press conference in Bauchi.
He said, “ our coalition has filed several petitions to the EFCC against corrupt practices of the former governor since 11 days after he assumed duty, when he obtained a four billion naira loan, and other corrupt practices and irregularities we observed in the award and execution of various contracts that were not executed in the State, still the anti-graft agency remains adamant, they didn’t do anything about it.”
Bibi Dogo claimed that “we have visited the EFCC several times and gave clarifications of the locations where the properties that we suspected the governor obtained through corrupt practices are, but the EFCC deliberately refused to investigate him why?”, he queried.
He alleged that,” before ex- Governor Abubakar became a Governor he had only one house in Bauchi and after he became a governor, in Kano State alone, he has properties worth over Ten billion Naira (10bn) he bought a House near Kano State Government House, There is another one in Ahmadu Bello Way Kano he has another House along Sokoto Road in Kano State and a house with a chemist near their family house at Gyadi- Gyadi apart from the location of his properties in Abuja, many states and even outside the country but still the EFCC were still silent about the issue.”
He alleged that the former governor awarded a contract worth 3.2bn for the purchase of 109 vehicles but they are yet to be supplied and he went away with over 17 lucrative cars belonging to the state government .
Chairman said his commission submitted 665 different papers against the alleged wrong doing by the former governor when he was the governor of Bauchi State.
Bibi Dogo said initially the agency gave the EFCC two weeks ultimatum to investigate and prosecute the former governor but they didn’t However, this three days serves as a last warning to the anti- graft agency either to investigate the former governor or they will face serious prosecution.
Efforts to speak to the spokesman of the former Governor, Ali M Ali were not successful but a close aide to the former Governor who doesn’t want to be mention said “ Even though I am not the spokesperson of the EFCC but what the coalition failed to understand is that the EFCC has its way of operations, they have their rules and regulations which they have to follow if all the allegations against the former governor are weak they will not waste their time prosecuting the suit they will lose in court , but to crown it all, former Governor Abubakar did well when he was a governor and he followed due process in the award of all contracts during his tenure. There is nothing to cry about, but political gimmick and personal hatred against the former governor.”
