From Ahmad Mohammed, Bauchi
Bauchi State Governor elect, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, has alleged that the outgoing Governor of the State, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, is planning to award spurious contracts worth N4billion and to recruit 8,000 teachers before transition, with a view to leaving financial burden to him when he takes over.
However, the allegation was described as baseless by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abubakar, Sufyanu el Dadewa, who said the government opened its doors to the Governor elect, adding that whatever questions or clarifications they want could be made directly to the government and not through the press to raise false alarm.
Spokesperson to the Governor elect, Ladan Salihu, made the allegation while speaking with reporters in Bauchi, where he lamented that the actions were allegedly designed to sabotage and cripple the incoming administration at its inception.
Salihu said “while we do not question the authority of the present administration to award contracts and make financial transactions for the day to day running of the government, it beats the imagination that instead of focusing on closing its books, the outgoing government has chosen the dishonourable option of emptying the treasury and over-burdening the people with enormous debts again”.
Salihu who said that Governor Abubakar sacked 2,000 traditional district heads when he took over in 2015 on the ground that the state had financial predicament, wondered why the governor would employ new staff at the expiration of his tenure.
He alleged that state assets were currently being carted away by officials of the outgoing government, warning that their administration would conduct thorough capital inventory and forensic audit of all financial transactions carried out by the outgoing government.
Press Secretary to Governor Abubakar said Nigeria and Bauchi State are country and state governed by law, adding that government activities are being carried out within the ambit of the law and in the best interest of the State.
He said government will continue to do what is right within the law and what is beneficial to the people of the State.
