Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Aubakar has harped on the need for Nigerians to emulate the virtues of the late President Shehu Shagari, who worked for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria.
Alhaji Atiku in a statement by his Media Adviser, Nazi Paul Ibe,, said this while fielding questions from journalists shortly after paying a condolence visit to the family of the late President in Sokoto at the weekend.
The former Vice President’s condolence visit to the family of the late President Shehu Shagari at which he was joined by former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, came barely 24.hours after his return to the country.
Atiku and Abdulsalami after signing the condolence register, described the late Shagari as one of those who strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and as such his death has become a national loss.
Responding on behalf of the family, Shagari’s eldest son, Bala Shagari says it is comforting for the family to hear the soothing words of those visiting to condole with them.
Atiku in an interview with journalists after the visit, further enjoined Nigerians to emulate the late President Shagari’s virtues.
