ASCE, Water Resources to partner on capacity building

The America Society of Civil Engineers Nigeria International Section(ASCE) and Ministry of Water Resources are set to collaborate to explore capacity building among key staff of the ministry .
This was disclosed yesterday by the President of ASEC Engr. Ajose Otinwa during a courtesy call in the Minister of Water Resources, Suleman Adamu in his office in Abuja.
Engr. Otinwa said it has become very important for the ministry to improve through collaborations with
ASCE members who have been operating in water resources sector to possess high capacities for effective collaboration.
“We would like to explore and harness possibility of capacity building for your Ministry’s key staff in conjunction with ASCE headquarters”.
He also told the minister that ASCE will carry out a subtle membership drive in the Ministry.
He maintained that ASCE as a global body is made up of 152,000 members that cut across over 200 countries in all the continents of the world and with the largest online library and many benefits for its members.
The president pointed out on some significant developments in the activities of ASCE in Nigeria.
“we are glad to say that out of that global membership, Nigeria International Section contributes about 685 members, including students. We have over 15 Fellows of ASCE made up of accomplished engineers and still counting”.
He added that, the minister can rely on members for professionalism in all areas of civil engineering and willing to contribute in executing the Executive Order 009.
“Our members in Nigeria are registered engineering professionals and are also members of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) and some other engineering bodies.”
The Section supports development of younger members and students through various developmental programs and mentorship.
We have also active Student Chapters at Covenant University, (CU), Ota, Ogun State,Lagos State Polytechnic, (LASPOTECH), Lagos Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB), Ogun State among other.
Responding, the Minister of Water Resources Suleiman Adamu, who was full of joy expressed that there is no greater profession like Engineering and he is luck to be on of them.
Adamu said all we have been doing in the last four years is to restore back professionalism in the system, including the technical department by putting the right people at the right section of working and brainstorming together for effective capacity.
“The door is open in my ministry for effective capacity collaboration for my staff to be active members of ASEC”.
While appreciating ASEC for taking order 009 serious, he emphasized that “we should have dignity in what we are doing by removing negative social norms in our society”.
He urged the ASEC to contribute their quarter by donating toilets to schools and communities.”Lets start with the basic by showing commitment and being good ambassadors by identifying projects and making sure we deliver them for people”.
