A group, Kebbi Patriotic Forum (KPF) has called for the arrest and prosecution of retired Gen. Sarkin-Yaki Bello, an aide to detained former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
Gen. Bello, who headed the counterterrorism department in the NSA’s office, fled Nigeria in the wake of a the federal government probe of $2.1 billion meant for arms procurement by the last administration.
In a statement yesterday in Abuja, KPF said it had on good authority that Gen. Bello has since sneaked back into the country, and has been spotted in Abuja.
The statement was signed by Alhaji Lawal Ahmed and Mallam Inuwa Mohammed, the group’s coordinator and secretary respectively.
“We urge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other agencies involved in the armsgate probe to dust the file of Gen. Sarkin-Yaki Bello, who we heard has returned to Nigeria under an alias,” the statement said.
“This call is particularly important in the face of documentary evidence on how a few Nigerians converted monies meant to combat terrorism in their personal use.
“A clear conscience, they say, fears no accusation. And those who wish to appear before the alter of equity, should do so with clean hands. Why is General Bello on the run if he has nothing to hide?
“Today we find ourselves battling the scourge of terrorism simply because persons entrusted with the responsibility of arming our troops ended up lining their pockets,”, the group said, stressing, “this is the day of reckoning and all should be made to account for their stewardship”.
