Appeal Court grants Stay of Execution against Alex Okoh, DG, BPE

The Court of Appeal Abuja Division has ordered an immediate stay of execution of the Ruling / Committal Order of Justice A.I. Chikere of the Federal High Court Abuja which ordered that Mr. Alex A. Okoh, DG, BPE be remanded in prison custody for a minimum of 30 days for contempt of court.
Giving the order on Monday, in Appeal number CA/A/117/M/2019, the Appeal Court, presided over by Hon. Justice S. J. Adah, Justice R. M. Abdulahi and Justice M. B. Idris as members of the Panel, directed all the parties to maintain status quo antepending the hearing and determination of the motion fixed for January 20, 2020.
The restraining order reads in part:”An order restraining the respondent, the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, their servants, agents, law enforcement agents and persons acting for or on behalf of the Respondent from enforcing, attempting to enforce arrest or imprisoning the 2nd Respondent/Applicant pursuant to the ruling/committal order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Coram Chikere J. dated 17th December, 2019 in the suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/583/2004 BFI Group Corporation v Bureau of Public Enterprises, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Appellants/ Applicants”,
It would be recalled that a committal proceeding was instituted against BPE and Mr. Alex A. Okoh, DG, BPE following an allegation that the BPE failed to fully execute the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Court of Appeal in the matter of BFIG v. BPE.
The Bureau had at all times complied with all judgments in respect of ALSCON. However, BFIG has consistently failed to meet its financial commitments as directed by the courts to pay the bid price of USD$410 million as submitted by BFIG in 2004. my.
Commending the promoters of the Forum who are Saudi Arabia born Nigerians, Hon Dabiri, said by the Saudis companies would definitely give a boost to the economy of the country.
She further said it would give credence to the fact that Nigeria was an investment destination, promising that her Commission would ensure that the companies had a smooth take off.
She said: “ the smart ones have since realised that Nigeria is an investment haven and are coming in to take advantage of it particularly in the area of agriculture, health, education and even hospitality business as well. I think the wise ones are here now and by the time others come the whole place would have taken up.”
She said she was excited to see Nigerians born in Saudi Arabia coming home for the first and getting excited about promoting investment between the kingdom and Nigeria
“ Subsequently, we will be working with them to exhibit Nigeria products in Saudi Arabia. What we are doing here is forsteting Nigeria-Saudi Arabia relationship.
“ It is amazing what Nigerians can do and what our young people can do and it only shows that our country is just a place to be and a country to invest in.
“ I want to commend the Yaro Brothers for putting this Forum together and I want to say that this is the kind of things we all should be doing. What they have done is very encouraging and they deserve every support.
“ We are going to work with the Yaro Brothers because they have shown that they really understand what we are doing as Commission.
She further hinted that “The next stage would to take this exhibitions to Saudi Arabia to exhibit Nigeria products there so we would now have the avenue to promote our companies in that country.
This initiative is the begining of of many great things between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia and I must add that the exhibitions i have seen so far is simply amazing.”
She called on Nigerians in Diaspora to continue to partner with Nigeria so that “we can work together and make Nigeria great and this is why we have Nigeria in Diaspora Commission.”
The Executive Director of Al- Yaro International, Imran Umar Yaro, commend Hon Dabiri for her office support towards the organization of the Forum.
He said: “we want to thank Hon Dabiri for giving us all the support we need to host a successful exhibitions. We want to say she supported us from zero to 100 percent.”
