All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated its convention committee headed by the Jigawa state Governor, Abubakar Badaru.
Inaugurating the committee yesterday, National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun, said the members of the committee were specifically chosen from the six geo-political zones of the country, representing various interest groups.
He said “Everybody here has been specially chosen as everybody represents major interests in the party. I am sure that you are all aware that the task you are going to undertake now is a major one.
“We are having a very short sharp elective convention for good reason. For months, we have been talking forward and backward and sometimes, not in very acceptable terms and language, about the leadership of the party. No responsible organisation will allow these doubts to continue indefinitely. The earlier it is resolved, the better so that this party can forge ahead.
“So we have decided on a short period of election from ward level until the final event on the 14th of May. Yes, we would have wanted probably a little more time, but as catholic, I am aware that the Muslim’s fast starts just a couple of days we have set for the convention.
“Even though some people said we could still go ahead, I said no because I fast too and I know the first few days are the hardest and towards the end, a lot of our leaders will be heading for Umrah.
“The task that you have undertaken to perform is a heavy one and tough one. The APC is known, in spite of induced controversies, our primaries and congresses, and our last presidential primaries were by all account, one of the best ever held and I dare say it anywhere.”
He charged the committee to repeat the feat, saying “I have no doubt that this one, given the controversies that have preceded it, will also be a most watched convention. So you have the task of producing a convention that is free, fair and provide a level playing field for anybody who wants to aspire to any position.
“I want to see a reunited APC under whatever leadership your exercise brings up. We have a tough election ahead of us and we must prime ourselves for that election. We must not cuddle ourselves with any false sense of being the party in power. So, as you proceed please ensure that all these views are brought together into a one united APC.”
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Governor Badaru thanked the chairman for finding them worthy for the heinous task, and assured that the committee will not fail the party in its assignments, and will do everything possible to ensure the success of the convention.
“On behalf of the members of the committee, we thank the chairman and we want to assure you that we will not fail the party, we will do all it takes to come out stronger after the convention. God will guide us because we have a good heart.
“We believe God will support us and help us to be stronger. With the people around here, you can go to sleep”, he assured.
