From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna

Angry delegates and some aggrieved aspirants have disrupted the conduct of state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger state over alleged imposition of candidates by one of the prominent stakeholder of the party in the state.

Our reporter reliably gathered that the delegates were annoyed over a sudden appearance and distribution of a list of purported consensus candidates by the stakeholder and his conspirators when voting was about to start at the Abdulsalami Youth Centre at the weekend.

The delegates shouting “we do not want imposition” were said to have disrupted the procedure of the congress even after the agenda of the event has been shared and contestants given tags.

Speaking with our reporter in Minna, the secretary of the state congress committee, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, said that the congress was inconclusive due to its disruption by the aggrieved persons.

He said that the state congress committee had nothing to do with the list circulated by the stakeholder adding that “there was communication gap between the stakeholder and the followers”.

“The stakeholder had informed the committee that there were efforts to have harmonised list after we have successfully accredited 1791 delegates.

We thought he was communicating to us the decision of all the stakeholders because of his strategic position but after the procedure of voting was announced, some members started distributing a list of what they called consensus candidates and this triggered the anger of other candidates and delegates”, he said.

Comrade Sabo said that efforts to calm the delegates and convince them that the committee has nothing to do with the list failed adding that at this point security withdrew from the venue and “we have to leave”.

He explained that the committee has submitted its report to the national secretariat of the party in Abuja and that a meeting of all the stakeholders from the state, the committee members and the national officers of the party has been fixed for today.

They stated that the imposition of candidate will not be allowed and that no person should parade himself as leader of the party in the state until proper congress is conducted.
