Ta solarin University of Education, Ijagun, has emerged winner of this year’s Ideas Contest, one of the two categories of the just concluded Annual Entrepreneurship Week (ANEW) organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders in the education and business sectors to promote entrepreneur in Nigerian universities.
Announcing the results at a dinner organisd by the NUC in honor of the participants on Friday in Abuja, the Commission’s Executive Secretary Prof. Julius Okojie, represented by the Director, students Services, Mal. Ibrahim Dan Iya, Okojie said the objective of ANEW is to promote entrepreneur in Nigerian universities and to enrich its curriculum.
Speaking earlier, ANEW project consultant Dr. Shola Aliu, who commended the participating students, said their ideas will be complied and published.
He said 12 of the projects presented by the participating universities will form the pond ion which will be sent to all the universities in the country adding that the projects by the students is their contribution to solving the problem of youth restiveness in the country.
He said the nine projects that made it to the finals have only six months to be put into practice by the teams.
He said the winners of this year’s projects had fractional edge over one another and the competition was a clean one.
He said one of the challenges faced by this year’s contest was the inability of the competition to take place at zonal level which also hindered its rehearsals.
He urged coordinators representing schools to stop interfering during the project contest by asking their students direct questions.
Aliu expressed optimism that the future of Nigeria is bright from the enthusiasm and commitment showed by the students during the contest and if used the right way.
Tai solarin University of education winner of the ideas contest was presented with cash prize of N500,000, a trophy, a certificate of participation and a signed plague by the ES of NUC Prof. Julius Okojie, in recognition of their outstanding performance in first runner up, while N250,00 was given to 2nd position, N100,000 to 3rd position and consolation prizes of N50,000 to each of the 6 participants.
Members of the winning teams were also presented with medals.
Second runner up at the Ideas Contest category is team A, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ekiti state university came 3rd, 4th position goes to Benue State University Makurdi team A.
On the second category which is the “Make Your Mark”, University of Uyo took first position, followed by Bankok University, 2nd, Godwin Okoye University , 3rd, Ekiti State University 4th, University of Lagos 5th, Micheal Okpara University 6th, Tai solarin University 7th , Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta 8th and University of Port Harcourt 9th.
