Anambra intensifies medals haul, dominate karate

Team Anambra have won nine out of the 22 gold medals in karate as the event ended on Wednesday, to remain in strong contention for the best overall team at the festival.

The state also won 7 silver and four bronze medals, Cross River were second with eight gold, two silver and one bronze while Lagos got three gold, one silver and three bronze to emerge third.

Godwin Okoro coach of Anambra karate team expressed satisfaction with the performances of his athletes adding that the haul could have been more if they did better in the fights. He however said that the team would continue to dominate the game as the state has abundance of talented young karatakers.

In athletics, Cross River leads the pack with 34 gold, 21, silver and 21 silver, followed by Anambra 13 gold, 25 Silver and 13 bronze after conclusion of competitions in 53 events on Wednesday. Lagos garnered four gold, four silver and one bronze to be occupy the third position, while Niger got one gold, three silver and 11 bronze to be placed in the fourth position.

The coordinator of athletics Henry Ogunmakinju, described the events as keenly contested, adding that the officials would come out with new records broken and created after all events were concluded.

Katsina won two gold, one silver and one bronze to win the fives events, while Kano got two gold and three bronze to come second, Anambra were fourth with one gold, two silver and three bronze behind Lagos with one gold, two bronze and three bronze.

Competitions continue at the seventh national school sports festival holding in Otukpo, Benue. The festival would end on Nov. 16
