The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has commenced clamp down on illegal dumping of waste in Maitama district, as part of intensified effort towards preventing flooding and erosion in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
To this end, AMMC officials accompanied by a joint team of security personnel, on Monday, stormed and barricaded an illegal building material wastes dumpsite at a reserved green area, located near a river bank in Maitama.
Speaking in an interview with journalists during a visit to the site, Coordinator AMMC, Umar Shuaibu warned that developers and residents engaged in indiscriminate dumping of waste especially building wastes risk immediate prosecution.
Shuaibu reiterated that the Council is committed to ensuring adequate protection of the river channels and greener areas in FCT.
The AMMC Coordinator stressed that constant monitoring will be carried on to ensure the area is protected from such illegal activities.
It was observed that an unidentified developer carried on sand filling of greener area and blockage of river channels for construction of residential building in the area
