Stakeholders especially policy makers in Abuja, the nation’s capital city have enjoined to end reoccurring gender-based violence, harmful practices, early marriages and harrassment and other abuses melted out on the girl child.
The Shadow Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Ibrahim Victory Sawami, made this assertion, during the celebration of 2020 International Day for thegirl child.
Sawami, who is also the Girl child AMAC Chairman, for the annual event, urged stakeholders to urgently provide all the enabling power and conducive atmosphere that would promote the growth an advancement of the girl child.
She appealed to government, civil society groups and verious Leaders including parents to rise to empower and encourage the girl child to realise her dream and become agent of social change.
“As part of this year’s global takeover, girls are being given the chance to takeover key roles in business, politics, Media, government and non-governmental organisations.
“That’s why I’m here as the girl child chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council to shadow the office as a way of inspiring the dreams and aspirations of other girls towards occupying these key roles in the society”, she stressed.
She however encouraged the Girl Child that wherever she may be, whatever the circumstances she may face, to rise to maximise her potentials, demand for her rights as a member of the society with enormous contributions to make to the growth of her land.
Earlier, in his remarks, the AMAC Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido noted that in order to encourage women and by extension the girl child, the Council under his leadership has appointed women into key positions, to enable them to contribute their quota to the advancement of the society.
He said the authorities of the various arms of the Council gave a space to act as shadow chairman, Secretary and Speaker as entails in the hallowed Chamber, to encourage the young ones to learn how to be good leaders of tomorrow.
According to him, “women have been over neglected in the society and I have given the best of my life to them because my mother is a woman, as well as trusted allies with capacity to deliver.
“Women have be undermined as far as development is concerned, so I ensure that women are given place in my cabinet.”
