Benue State Scholarship Board has been reportedly enmeshed in fraud following allegation of deduction of bursary funds of indigent law students by the board.
An anonymous source who is also, an official of the National Union of Benue State Students, NUBESS disclosed to newsmen yesterday that officials of the board were deducting as much as 20,000 naira from bursary fees of the students.
He said the students are entitled to 200,000 naira, maintaining that the action of the board in deducting the student money was uncalled for.
But Executive Secretary of the Board, Mr. Isaac Igbe denied the allegation, describing the claim by the student body as false, adding, “we do no work with NUBESS”.
According to Igbe, the sum of 32.6m naira was released by the State government for the 2018/2019 bursary fee to be disbursed to 163 law students who applied for it.
“The amount was released last Friday and we immediately put up an announcement on the radio for prospective students to apply. They were asked to pay 2,000 naira for forms and 200 naira for payment report card. The names of 163 students were given to the State government by the Council of Legal Education and forwarded to us. I do not know about any 20,000 naira deduction”, the Executive Secretary stated.
