More than 50 persons are said to have been kidnapped in Gboko local government area of Benue State in the past eight months
A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the victims are mostly traders, even as he lamented over the high rate of kidnapping in the area.
Meanwhile, men of the Operation Zenda yesterday rescued a medical doctor Emmanuel Orhember of Baiki Hospital in Gboko.
Benue State Police Command Public Relation Officer DSP Catherine Anene who disclosed this to newsmen at the command headquarters in Makurdi, said the medical doctor was found and rescued from kidnappers den in Mbayior forest after three days in captivity.
DSP Anene said the operation which was led by the leader of squad SP Justin Gberindyer had engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel killing three(3)of them while others fled with bullet wounds, adding that the police is on the trail of the fleeing kidnappers.
Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the abductors, Dr Emmanuel Orhember said some gun men stormed his house, blind folded and took him away for three(3) days.
According to him, ‘the kidnappers made me lay on bare ground. They beat me severely even to the point of bruising my head with iron. One of them shot at my ankle and leg and requested me to give them money but I told them I do not have any money. I, however, give glory to God for the swift intervention of the police in rescuing me. I remain thankful to them’.
Items recovered from kidnappers include, assorted charms, arms and ammunition, phones, Sim cards etc.
