In order to ensure efficient waste management in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Abuja Environment Protection Board (AEPB) has directed contractors handling refuse collection in Territory to ensure avoid littering the roads.
The Head of Information and Outreach Programmes of the board, Mr. Joe Ukairo, who gave the directive told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the contractors were expected to deploy appropriate equipment and staff for refuse disposal, adding that the board would strictly monitor the contractors to ensure efficiency.
“We have two layers of supervisors; the district supervisors, who are middle level members of staff and the district coordinators, who are the management staff.
“We will ensure that the city is properly monitored on daily basis; the management meets to appraise performance and make adjustments where necessary,’’ he said.
Ukairo added that some residents of the city who engaged in illegal clearance and disposal of refuse without proper training and equipment constituted a nuisance, adding that such people would be sanctioned.
