From Umar Dankano,Yola.

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) Adamawa state Chapter has accused the Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s led administration of insensitivity and insincerity towards retirees plight in the state.
Chairman of the Union,Comrade Samson Almuru made the allegations in Yola during this year’s annual Pension Day 2020 anniversary decrying that since the advent of Governor Fintiri’s government no pensioner claims to have received his or her full gratuity.
Comrade Almuru, who was noticed visibly disturbed decried that from 2019 to date,200 of his members (pensioners) have died waiting to receive their pension while the state government is owing them over N27 Billion arrears.
Almuru regretted that during electioneering campaigns, they sat with the PDP candidate,Governor Fintiri on their issues promising to be considered as soon as he emerges victorious.A development that made the Union mobilised massive support for him from its membership cut across state and local government pensioners in the state.
“Since the inception of this Governor Fintiri’s administration no pensioner can claim to have received his full gratuity as between 2019 to date, over 200 pensioners died waiting to receive their pension benefits. This shouldn’t be the case.
“The Union is aware that some pensioners are given N50.000-N200.000 as part of their gratuity tagged assistance and the Government is owing Pensioners over N27 Billion i.e both state & L.G pensioners.
“We decided to celebrate this year’s Annual pension Year at this time as a mark to pray to God and thank Him that we are not dead but many of our colleagues are dead and gone, the essence of the World pensioners Day is rather painful those who contributed to the development of the state are neglected because they are retired.
“We as pensioners have done everything possible to even meet with His Excellency Governor Fintiri or to make the Government pay us our pensions but to no avail, therefore we have resolved to offer special prayer so that they may listen to us”.Almuru fumed
He also revealed that, the last time pension was reviewed in Adamawa was in 2003 as against the Pension Law which provides that pension is reviewable upward each time there is increase in salaries of workers or every five (5) years which was never implemented till now .
But in a swift reaction,Head of Civil service (HOS),Dr.Edgar Amos said the state government is “working tirelessly to see that pension matters are resolved “.
Represented at the occasion by the permanent secretary Administration,Alhaji Ahmad Dada explained to the pensioners that “this government is so concern with your plight and is working assiduously to putting smiles on your faces by paying the N27 Billion owed by both state and local government councils “.
Dada added that Governor Fintiri has already approved upward review of the monthly allocation for payment of gratuity of retired local government workers from N3.5 Million to N15 Million.
He reiterated that for speedy and steady approach to their plight,Governor Fintiri has set up a technical committee which has since verified the actual number of pensioners and has submitted its report back to the government.
