From Umar Dankano,Yola
A peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and a former gubernatorial aspirant in Adamawa state, Umar Ardo, has petitioned the commissioner of police in charge of Adamawa state over alleged threat to his life and that of his family and political associates from the state government.
Ardo, addressing a press conference at his private residence in Yola Tuesday, accused some politicians within the ruling PDP and some appointees in the state government of launching an attack on his house located at karewa Quarters yesterday, where vehicles were allegedly smashed and some persons physically injured.
Ardo, who was visibly angry, said that as a politician, with some like minds from all local government areas in the state, they were holding a crucial meeting on the matters affecting their party at his house in the state when suddenly, some hoodlums believed to be political thugs forced their way into the house and disrupted the meeting.
“We are all sitting and discussing about the issues affecting us as a party and possible ways to address the political squabbles within our party.
“Just suddenly, we heard skirmishes by the gate and towards the venue in my private home, only to come out and be attacked by some thugs who claimed to be sent by the state government through the secretary to the state government that our meeting was not in their interest and must stop.
“Before any one can do anything, those hooligans led by one known political thug nickname Dogo, started attacking people and smashing vehicles parked outside the house, resulting to injuring three people and vandalizing 6 vehicles.
“I immediately reported to the police commissioner who deployed some policemen and on sighting them, the thugs ran away but even some of the police confirmed they knew some the thugs personally.
“We are not scared by their violent act and we are committed to forming our reformed PDP in the state because the present administration is not giving us the needed political results we desire, so no one can claim monopoly of violence. We are equal to the task”, Ardo said.
Confirming the development, spokesman of the Adamawa police command, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, said Ardo has personally lodged an official complaint over the attack on his person and his political associates while in a meeting at his house.
Nguroje said the commissioner in the state, Audu Adamu Madaki, immediately directed the Area commander, Katew and the DPO Karewa division, to investigate the matter with a view to arresting whoever must have hands in the attack.
“The police have since swung into action and anybody caught in the breaking of law and order will be brought to book as provided by the law of the land to serve as lesson to others”, Nguroje said.
Reacting to the development, Director General, Media and Communications to the Governor of Adamawa State, Solomon Kumarga, condemned the violence in its entirety.
Kumarga said the state government has nothing to do with the attack, stressing that the leader of the hoodlums mentioned in the saga belongs to the opposition APC in the state and not PDP as claimed by Ardo.
Kumarga added that since the matter has been reported, then the security operatives should be allowed to fish out the organizers and perpetrators of the crime.
