From Umar Dankano, Yola
The intra-party lingering squabble rocking the Adamawa Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is taking a new dimension as a party chieftain and governorship aspirant, Umar Ardo, has accused the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of conniving with the National Chairman, Ahmad Makarfi, to hijack the party in Adamawa.
Ardo, in a statement in Yola, said the design to hand over the party to Atiku in Adamawa could be seen in the noncompliance with the party constitution in the last congresses in Adamawa where Atiku supporters who defected from All Progressives Congress (APC) within the past one week were allowed to participate in the congresses and even
elected as party leaders at local government level in violation of section (b) of the party constitution.
He cited the case of APC chairman in Jada local government where Atiku hails From, who defected from APC two week ago but later emerged last week as the PDP chairman of the local government.
Ardo said the noncompliance with the party constitution made him and other party members who constituted the backbone of PDP in Adamawa to boycott the Saturday state congress in Adamawa.
“This lackluster Atiku-Makarfi jamboree called state congress not only has no judicial legitimacy, but is also an utter disgrace to the PDP. In an effort to please Atiku and hand over the structure of the party to him, the constitution of the party has been disregarded.
“Many of those who were given party offices, especially local government chairmen and national delegates are his supporters who decamped from APC into the PDP about two weeks ago against the provisions of the party constitution and without being given a waiver. This is most sad.
“But the real issue is that if a former Vice President and a former governor can conspire to foster this evil on the party, then our democracy is dangerously threatened. It is condemnable and I do condemn it.
“I call on all PDP members of good standing across the state and the nation to stand up and fight it. For us in Adamawa, I assure members of the party this travesty will not see Christmas,” Ardo said.
However, the other faction of the party had their state congress election At the weekend which saw the emergence of Barrister Tahir Shehu as chairman and Abdullahi Prembe as the secretary, among other executive members of the party.
Inaugurating the new executives, the Chairman of the Congress Committee, Rt Honourable Ishaku Bawa, charged them to run an open door administration where everyone will be carried along.
Bawa said the new executive needed to work assiduously to ensure internal democracy among all and sundry so that the party can wax stronger to form next government in 2019 Elections.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Shehu, called on the party members,i ncluding the aggrieved ones to join hands together in chasing out the ruling APC government in the state and at the national level in 2019.
