The northern social cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has called on northerners to change the negative traits associated with it, because it has painted the region in bad light.
The Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Ibrahim Commasie made the assertion when he received in audience the leadership of the Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa (JMA), in Kaduna yesterday.
Alhaji Commasie said of recent the north has become nothing but havens for kidnappers, cattle rustlers, drug addicts and others which are creating general insecurity in the region.
According to him, “the Boko Haram insurgency is ravaging the north and even extended to other parts of the country. Then another demon raised its head in the form of kidnappers. Today, the kidnapped Chibok girls are still missing, and the Dapchi school girls’ whereabouts is unknown.
“Cattle rustlers and armed robbers are having a field day, creating fear and panics in the minds of the people.
“The painful thing is that women and children suffer in these negative traits, and that is why I am excited to welcome you to our Secretariat as mothers of the North. You have been at the forefront canvassing for the right of Northern women and children even before independence.
“Your founder, late Hajiya Laila Dogonyaro’s contributions to women and children in the region cannot be forgotten. It is sad to note that all of a sudden the Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa went to sleep and refused to perform its responsibility.
“This visit is a reawakening call to you as mothers to ensure that the North regains its lost glory and all the negative traits are wiped out.
“The ACF and other northern groups will give all supports needed to your organization in the advancement of women and youth in the region.
Don’t hesitate to let us know your challenges even if we can’t solve it, we will direct you to the appropriate quarters,” he said.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of JMA, Mrs. Aishatu Pamela Sadauki, said in line with the vision of the late Premier, Sir Ahmadu Bello, to educate and empower the women of Northern Nigeria, the JMA Resuscitation Committee Plan to continue with the ethics towards the development of the north and Nigeria in general.
She added that the Association is working towards encouraging Northern Nigeria women to live in peaceful coexistence and harmony and to be tolerant through hardwork, self-reliance, ethical revolution, healthy life style and understanding of each other.
Mrs. Sadauki who was represented by the Vice Chairperson, Hajiya Aisha Aliko Mohammed, agreed that JMA has been asleep for long and it’s time to wake up from its slumber to fight the cause of Northern women.
She said some of the projects of the Association among others are: JMA Orphanage Home, Kaduna; JMA Premier Nursery, Primary and Secondary School, Kaduna; JMA Pilot Project, for empowerment of Almajiris and Non-privileged youth, and Skills acquisition for women and youth like ‘Yaki da Jahilici’ (Adult Education) and computer training and tailoring.
