The death of a 95 year old blind man, Okpala Obiosa Nwaka was yesterday linked to the worsening impasse ravaging Obecha and Umuinyagbo communities in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Expectedly, palpable tension and fear of the unknown have continued to unsettle residents of both communities even though security agents have taken over the areas.
The incident which allegedly led to the death of the old man, investigation revealed, occurred on Thursday night when the fight between both communities reportedly escalated with the use of dangerous weapons that alleged hit the old man on his head, leaving him unconscious, and later gave up the ghost.
It was gathered that the fracas allegedly left five other persons, especially, elders and women severally injured.
An oil company has indicated interest to come and pay compensation on the land, this triggered a fresh face off as the land was alleged to have been owned by a family in Oboma community after it has reported received compensation on the land in 1970.
It was, however, learnt that Oboma community allegedly launched a reprisal attack on Obecha community two weeks ago in retaliation for the alleged killing of the non-native resident in Oboma suspiciously by Obecha youths.Since the killing of the said resident, (name withheld), there has been no peace in both communities until the night of Thursday when the Obecha youths allegedly invaded Oboma, destroying property.
But the Police Officers in Obiaruku Police Division who did not want their names in the print confirmed the incident, adding that some of the youths from both communities have been arrested, and are helping the police for further investigation.
The Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim had last week warned that various communities in Ndokwa East to steer clear of trouble, adding that anybody caught causing trouble would be brought to book.
