Unknown gunmen have attacked the Gwaram local government area, killing scores of people, including 7 policemen attached to the Police Division in the area.

The attack came while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) states’ governors were holding their meetings around midnight in the state.

The gunmen also attacked and burnt down the Shari’ah court and Unity Bank branch that have just been re-opened after suffering similar attack by some gunmen suspected to be robbers.

According to an eye witness at the area Malam Sunusi Muktar, who is a business man, the attack came while he was saying his midnight prayers at 1pm.

According to him, “I was in my bedroom saying my prayers when I heard intermittent gunshots”.

“I started hearing shouts of people and I began intensive prayers for protection from God while the gunshots also woke my wife, who also joined me in the prayers”, he explained.

The Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr. Tambari Yabo Muhammad confirmed the “unfortunate attack at around 1.30 am that lasted till 4 am, when some 200 terrorists came in droves using Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) to attack a Shari’ah court in Gwaram local government secretariat and Unity Bank”.

The AIG said four mobile policemen, three conventional policemen and a security guard were killed in the attack.

He said” though no arrests were made the police put-up a fierce fight that repelled the attack and from the blood stains all over the place, I am sure that they too must have recorded casualties and probably taken them away”.

He said they were about 200 in number and came in motorcycles and cars and they disappeared into the night after breaking into the Unity Bank domiciled in the area.
