A 48 year-old man, Remy Achiebe, on Thursday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, charged with obtaining N600,000 under the pretext of giving a woman a shop.
The accused is facing a three-count charge of false pretences, stealing and issuance of a dud cheque.
The Prosecutor, Insp Gabriel Ekundayo, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in July 2013, at No. 17, Bode Thomas St., Surulere, Lagos.
He said the accused obtained N600,000 from Ms. Ngozi Okeke to give her a shop and kitchen equipment which he failed to do.
Ekundayo said that Okeke paid N600,000 into Achiebe’s bank account and promised to pay the balance within six months but he refused.
He said that Okeke requested for a refund of the money since Achiebe refused to collect the balance later.
The prosecutor added that Achiebe issued a dud Zenith Bank cheque for N600,000 to Okeke on Oct. 31, 2013.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 313 and 319 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs. N.O. Ojoromi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till November 20 for mention. (NAN)
